About The Park

History:
The land is privately owned by Bretford .J Griffin. This property is dedicated for the purpose of community development, job training and positive self-help. The idea was conceived by the late Professor HY Griffin and later endowed by his son the late John L. Griffin. Bretford J. Griffin, the Grandson of the late Professor HY Griffin now serves as the project development manager.

Location:
The YYC & MyPark (180 Church Street, Quinton, AL  35130) are two separate but adjoining areas.  This approximately 5-½ acre plot is located on county Road 81 (Sharon Blvd) only 10 minutes from the Township of West Jefferson located in between Quinton and Dora Alabama.  The YYC and park are less than 3 minutes from an on and off ramp of the new Interstate 22 that connects to the Alabama, US interstate system.  The un-incorporated neighborhood the park is located is named Yerkwood, which is adjacent to Burnwell and Dora, AL 35038.  My best knowledge is that Yerkwood was at one point, in part, an Indian Burial Ground and later a prison camp and slave holding area during the Civil War.  As a kid growing up, I found many Indian artifacts arrowheads, etc along the small stream that runs along the outer boundary of MyPark.  The park lies in between and is adjacent to Sharon Blvd and St Joseph Baptist Church located on Church Street.  There are three entry points for the park: Sharon blvd, Smoot and Church Streets.  The Park is beautifully nestled in-between two hills with beautiful green foliage during the summer and is a beautiful golden foliage change during the fall.

Vision:
Create a diverse community awareness and self-help forum through mutual positive goals that are the same throughout our communities

Mission:
Provide a show and tell positive revitalization of the focus community areas by the establishment of an “event” youth Peace Park.

Strategy:
This endeavor provides the forum through various programs for creating and reestablishing community pride via support relationships with local churches, public service and private organizations.
The tools for success are education, recreation and community service.

“MyPark” was selected as the name for this park by theYerkwood Youth Club members. They believe that this name implies community ownership by the Youth.
