SYDNEY -- Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape faced calls to resign Thursday after widespread violence and looting in the Pacific island nation reportedly left at least 16 people dead and dozens injured.

Military units were called in to restore order after unrest exploded on Wednesday following a protest by public servants and police over a deduction to their salaries that the government has blamed on an administrative glitch.
