ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- A former government minister in Kazakhstan was sentenced to 24 years in prison on Monday for beating his partner to death, ending a trial that has gripped and shocked the Central Asian nation for six weeks and led to a tightening of the law covering domestic violence.

Kuandyk Bishimbayev, 44, a former economy minister, was convicted of torturing and murdering his common-law wife, Saltanat Nukenova, 31, in November. He has the right to appeal.
