Japan's Itochu to build low-carbon iron supply chain with Brazil, UAE

Steel industry bets on manufacturing method using reduced iron to cut emissions

A new plant in the United Arab Emirates will process high-grade Brazilian iron ore into reduced iron and send it to Japan. (Emirates Steel)

TOKYO -- Japanese trading house Itochu will build a far-flung supply chain for reduced iron, a steel feedstock with a relatively small carbon footprint, linking Brazil, the United Arab Emirates and Japan amid a push by the steel industry to slash carbon emissions.

High-grade iron ore from Brazil will be supplied to a new plant in the UAE for processing into reduced iron, which will then be imported into Japan.
