TOKYO -- Japan's core inflation rate accelerated for the third straight month in July due to higher electricity costs, remaining above the central bank's 2% target, according to government data released on Friday.

The core consumer price index, which excludes fresh food, rose 2.7% from the same month a year earlier, outpacing an increase of 2.6% in June. The latest figures from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications match the median forecast of 2.7% among economists surveyed by QUICK.
