NEW DELHI -- Hundreds of thousands across India have taken to the streets as doctors stage a mass hospital walkout in protest at the rape-murder of a female medic, which has sparked fresh outrage over sexual violence against women.

The demonstrations have swelled in recent days with rallies by doctors, nurses and other health care workers in major cities nationwide, including the capital New Delhi and eastern Kolkata where the victim was found dead at a state-run hospital last week.
