Global election results show importance of functioning democracy

Growing populism, confusion could benefit authoritarian regimes

Around the world this year, ruling parties and coalitions have faced defeats or hard-fought battles in major elections. The high-profile U.S. presidential vote will happen in November, while in Japan, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's decision to step down has spurred growing speculation that a lower-house election will take place sooner rather than later.

Major changes in domestic politics resulting from leadership reshuffles would have a global impact. Disruptions in the international order could benefit authoritarian actors like China, Russia or North Korea. Countries must strengthen democracy by learning from the common agenda reflected in the popular will.
