HONG KONG -- China's securities regulator on Friday said it has penalized embattled developer China Evergrande Group for fraud related to the issuance of onshore bonds, although it appeared to be repeating what the developer itself had disclosed in March.

The announcement comes as speculation swirls over a potential penalty against the group's auditor, PwC.
