HONG KONG -- Fifteen years ago in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang region, thousands of ethnic Uyghurs took to the streets to demand equal treatment and rights as those enjoyed by Han Chinese.

Xinjiang would never be the same.
